DHAKA: Police on Saturday detained 16 pro-BNP lawyers, including Dhaka Bar former General Secretary Khorshed Mia Alam and advocate Mahbubur Rahman from the Mazaar Gate near the Supreme Court when they tried to enter the Supreme Court premises to hold a rally organised by Supreme Court Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Samity, a pro-BNP lawyers’ organisation.
BNP-backed lawyer Advocate Monirul Islam confirmed the matter to banglamail.
The law enforcers detained them around 10:15am when while they were attending the rally.
Earlier, on Friday night, law enforcers removed loud speakers and sitting arrangements from the apex court’s premises for not having a permit for the rally.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was supposed to speak at the rally.
Supreme Court Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Samity, a pro-BNP lawyers’ organisation, convened the rally in protest against the countrywide disappearance, adduction, killing and repression.
Meanwhile, BNP called a countrywide protest programme on Sunday in protest against the bar on the party members to hold a program in the capital Thursday.
BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the announcement at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan office on Friday morning.
