Lutfur becomes Tower Hamlets mayor again
DHAKA: Lutfur Rahman was elected the executive mayor of Tower Hamlets for a second time.
Earlier, in 2010, he was elected as the executive mayor of Tower Hamlets as an Independent candidate.
Lutfur beat the Labour Party candidate in the second choice of voting.
A candidate needs 51 percent votes to win in first round.
Tower Hamlets borough has a total of 181,871 voters. Among them, only 86,542 exercised their franchise.
Rahman bagged 37,395 votes while Labour Party’s s John Biggs secured 34,143 votes.
There were 10 candidates in the contest for the position of executive mayor.
Besides, 45 councillors were elected for the Tower Hamlets local council.
Local council elections were held across UK last Thursday.
