DHAKA: At least 12 pro-BNP lawyers were detained from the Mazaar Gate near the Supreme Court today when they tried to enter the Supreme Court premises to hold a pre-scheduled rally defying police restriction.
Supreme Court Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Samity, a pro-BNP lawyers’ organisation, was to hold a rally on the apex court’s premises at 10:00am protesting abduction and killing of seven-murder in Narayanganj and demanding justice and establishment of rule of law in the country.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was supposed to speak at the rally as the chief guest.
The law enforcers, in the morning, obstructed the lawyers from entering the court premise saying that the BNP’s lawyers did not seek permission from SC authorities. There is a High Court order on not holding rallies on the Supreme Court premises, police said.
Police made the detention after a scuffle with the lawyers, who tried to enter the court premise forcefully and exchanged hot words with the law enforcers.
A group of pro-BNP lawyers were staging demonstration against the police action in the area till 11:20am when the report was filed.
Last night, police halted the arrangement of the programme, disconnecting the electricity light and removing the chairs from the SC premise where the rally was scheduled to be held.
The SC Registrar, AKM Shamsul Islam last night told The Daily Star that SC authorities have not given permission to the lawyers for holding the rally as they did not informed it to the authorities earlier.
